PMI CVC Honored with Member Growth Achievement Award from PMI
PMI Central Virginia Chapter is the recipient of the 2003 Chapter Member Growth Achievement Award in Category II. This award is given in recognition of the Chapter for our 2002 activities, initiatives, and commitment to promoting project management in our community while attracting new members. The 2002 Membership Committee included Beth Murray, Betty Jane Hughes, Doug Loomer, Bob Notto, and Renee Wentworth. This committee was integral in helping PMI CVC attract new members and keep our existing ones to achieve an overall twenty percent member growth rate, one of the highest percentages among chapters in our category.
PMI CVC was recognized at the September PMI Leadership Meeting in Baltimore. The award was officially presented at the PMI Component Awards Ceremony held in conjunction with the PMI Professional Awards Ceremony of PMI's Global Congress-North America.

Members Attend Leadership Meeting in Baltimore
...and Weather the Effects of Hurricane Isabel!
Several PMI CVC board members attended the 2003 Leadership Meeting prior to North American Congress held in Baltimore, MD. Kathleen Stehly, President; Robert Berlin, VP, Certification; Elizabeth Gravitt, VP, Finance; Kathie Tennant, Past President; Bud Higgins, VP, Communications; and Jim Hayden, VP, Professional Development attended leadership events September 18, 19, and 20. The conference was eventful...providing insight into many the new things that will affect our chapter in the future. It was made even more eventful by the uninvited attendance of Hurricane Isabel!

PMI CVC Facts and History on Display
Board members had the opportunity to attend both Operational Presentations and Regional Breakouts. Three operational areas where the chapter officers gained valuable insight were: Strategic Planning for Components, Alliances with Other Professional Organizations, and Changes to the Registered Education Provider (REP) Program. The Chapter Board will leverage these specific areas going forward in the coming months. At the Regional Breakout, Jim Hayden presented the overview of the 2005 Region 5 PM Seminar to be hosted in Richmond in May 2005. Jim is the overall Project Manager for this regional effort and is in the process of getting this project off the ground beginining with a charter by the regional chapter presidents.

Taking a Break to Enjoy the Baltimore Attractions
Then came the unwelcome visitor, Hurricane Isabel! With much bluster and a significant amount of storm-surge, Isabel roared into town the evening of September 18th. A number of presentations were delayed and or cancelled due to the flooding and loss of power. Concern for loved ones at home tempered the festivities but the good reports from home came in and helped the spirits rise again. Flooding and the effects of the storm became a subject of conversation for many, and a large number of storm-related projects (both personal and professional) were overheard to be in the early stages of definition.

Jim, Robert, Elizabeth, and Kathleen - Ready to Tell the PMI Global Community All About PMI CVC
The Leadership Conference is a great opportunity for the Board to seek out and explore better ways to serve our membership. It is a great way to see how other chapters are serving their members and see how those methods can be leveraged in PMI CVC. Look for more information regarding the chapter's strategic plan, our involvement with outside organizations, changes with the REP program, and the 2005 Region 5 PM Seminar in the months to come.

To preserve the integrity of the PMI Leadership program, LDEC members are not permitted to hold official positions in PMI Chapters. Since Kathleen was slated to be the PMI CVC Past President for 2004, the CVC Board will take on the task of making the appropriate position adjustments for this term. We all wish Kathleen the best of luck in this role and send a hearty congratulations!

CVC Annual Membership Survey
It's that time of year again when we are selecting the leadership for open board positions and preparing for next years' activities. One source of valuable feedback from last year was that provided in the Annual Membership Survey. The survey results were used to plan this years events, activities, and improvements projects. For example, the membership requested professional development seminars, opportunities for personal development, improved quality of speakers, and an improved registration system. The Board designed and implemented plans to meet the desires of the membership. The Board's report card this year will show the delivery of three professional development seminars, an improved process for the meeting sign in, and a speakers kit to aid presenters in the development and presentation of material. In the spring, the pilot program "30 Minute Project Manager - Sharing Experiences" was implemented in which four members took advantage of the opportunity to share. The third quarter brought an improved online ordering system designed to take a step toward the improvements members requested.
Ninety members participated in the survey last year. With our increase in membership, we would like to double the response rate this year. Your feedback is vital to ensure PMI CVC continues to meet the needs of the membership. With the great results and efficiency of the online version last year, we are going to offer that method as our only collection means in 2004. To access the survey, simply go to the PMI CVC Home Page (pmicvc.org), and select the appropriate links from that page. You may also go directly to the survey using this link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=54621121933.
Thank you
in advance for taking the time to complete the survey to help PMI CVC continue
serving your memberships needs.

Certification Exam Period Extended
In the new letter to PMP candidates scheduled to take their PMP certification exam, the Project Management Institute's Certification Program Department has announced an new scheduling timeframe. In the latest eligibility letters, candidates are notified that they have up to one year from the eligibility date to schedule and take the exam, an extention from the previous six month period. This change in policy grants the candidate one full year of eligibility with a caveat -- candidates are not eligible for further extensions. If a candidate wishes to test at a date beyond the initial eligibility period, PMI recommends cancelling the scheduled examination appointment per the Examination Cancellation, Rescheduling and No-Show Policy below and contacting PMI. Following this procedure can avoid being considered a no-show and the requirement to pay the full certification fees in order to reschedule and take the PMP Certification Examination.
While discussion on this change has been in the works for some time now, the current PMP handbook still contains the original six month eligibility period. We are expecting official communications on this change in the future. You can follow this link to Breaking News on PMI Certifications.

Earn Professional Development Units for Newsletter Submissions
Many PMI Component organizations have been requesting confirmation that Project Management Professionals (PMPs) can receive Professional Development Units (PDUs) for submissions covering a project management topic published in a component newsletter. After a thorough review, PMI has approved these activities for credit based on the educational experience gained through the research devoted to composing these submissions. PMPs may claim credit for a published newsletter submission as a Self-Directed Learning (2sdl) PDU activity. To claim the PDUs, PMPs should identify the time spent in review of the educational resources used to prepare the submission. After publication in the newsletter, PMPs may submit a PDU category 2sdl claim earning one PDU for each hour spent conducting this research. This same method can be used to earn PDUs for submissions on a project management topic that are published in a corporate newsletter. More information on Self-Directed Learning PDUs can be found on page five of the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Handbook. The handbook can be downloaded from PMI's Web site www.pmi.org or requested in printed form by contacting PMI's Customer Service Department at pmihq@pmi.org or +1-610-356-4600. Active PMI members may request materials directly from our Web site by selecting "Publications & Information Resources > Request Promotional Materials" on PMI's homepage.
For further information regarding self-directed PDUs or other PDU questions please contact the CVC VP, Professional Development. For questions on how to submit an article for the PMI CVC Newsletter contact the CVC VP, Communications.

Book Review - ABCs for Management Success
CJ Hutchinson, PMP, is a member of PMI CVC who recently earned her Project Management Professional certification. CJ is the Data Reliability Leader for GE Wealth and Income Management, highly respected for her management and interpersonal skills. As a testimony to those skills, a peer encouraged her to write a book describing how to succeed in management. CJ spent the last year writing ABCs for Management Success in which she incorporated her lessons learned and observations of successful management.
ABCs for Management Success is an easy read full of tips on how to be successful. CJ uses each letter of the alphabet to highlight the point of the chapter. For example, "A" is Attitudes for Success; "B" is Backstabber - A Potential Success Killer, with "Z" as Zero in On Your Ticket to Success. CJ used an interesting approach to pull the reader into a section by asking thought provoking questions followed by the recommendations to be successful. This book has something for everyone. For new managers, this book will aid in charting future career goals and provides key learning from a successful experienced manager. An experienced manager will find the book useful aid to identifying areas of improvement, understanding why some behaviors should stop and other should be started in order to continue or rekindle a successful career.
