September 2008 - PMO LIG News

PMO LIG News – September 2008

I am elated by the opportunity to serve as chair for the Portfolio Management local interest group (PMO LIG) for the Central Virginia Chapter. Our group is distinguished from other PMOs by its exclusive focus on Project Portfolio Management.

The PMO LIG eagerly anticipates the release of PMI's 2008 versions of its Portfolio Management Standard and OPM3 which identifies hundreds of best practices for Project, Program, and Portfolio management.

To enrich and invigorate our understanding of portfolio management and the automated tools which support this discipline, I will be inviting dynamic companies with the highest-rated tool sets to deliver presentations to both the PMO LIG and the entire PMI CVC membership. The companies being invited are identified in the Magic Quadrant for IT Project and Portfolio Management - Gartner June13, 2008 and Forrester WaveT Project Portfolio Management Tools, Q4 '07.

I have already received commitments from Planview, Daptiv, and UMT Consulting Group. Invitations will be issued to CA, HP, Compuware, Primavera, Serena, IBM, Microsoft, and Robbins-Gioia. These presentations will NOT be sales pitches. They will be genuine discussions regarding individual company perspectives on project portfolio management and the way in which their software product(s) support those perspectives. Just as PMI holds a perspective on portfolio management - reflected through its Portfolio Management Standard and OPM3 best practices - these companies offer what could be a more prospective, enlightened and pragmatic viewpoint that is worth consideration.
