Letter from the President

What an exciting start to the year! We've celebrated our 1000th Member. Let me again thank our project manager for the event, Joe Garritano, PMP and his great team of volunteers: Gayle Besosa, Bill Dompke, PMP, Ed Hellermann, PMP, Tilithia Brown, PMP, Andrew P Shulick, PMP, Barbara Hilton, PMP and Susan Shumate-Layman, PMP. Thanks so very much for a great event!

We've got a great start on some exciting new programs for our members. Let me tell you what we're working on…

30 Minute Meeting: We've added a new 30 minute program before our regular chapter meetings. The focus of this meeting will be to provide more in-depth communication regarding the chapter to you, our members. The meeting will run from 5:15 PM to 5:45 PM coincident with the normal networking. This program will give another 0.5 PDUs for members who are PMPs. The following table outlines the topics that will be covered and the month(s) when the topic will be covered.

Month Speaker Topic
February Chapter President Region 5 Leadership Meeting Report
March/September VP, Membership New Member Orientation
April Chapter President Strategic Planning
May/October VP, Professional Development PDU Reporting
June CoOp Partners Cooperative Agreements Benefits
July Chapter President Mid-Year Board Report
November Chapter President PMI Leadership Meeting Report

West End Monthly Meeting: We will be initiating a 2nd monthly meeting in the West End starting in May! This will be a pilot and run through the month of July. We will take the month of August to evaluate the pilot program. If the support exists to maintain this program we will keep this meeting as a permanent part of our chapter offering. The meeting will be on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Our Southside meeting will continue to be held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. The new meeting will, at times, feature the same speaker as our normal Wednesday night meeting. We will also have the opportunity to feature alternate speakers as well.

Fredericksburg Meeting: A number of members have indicated interest in starting a meeting to serve members who live in the Fredericksburg area. They are looking for others who would be interested in a meeting at this location.

Electronic Voting Project: Robert Berlin, our Past President is leading our effort to enable electronic voting for our Board of Directors starting this October. This project will expand the ability of our members to participate in the election of our chapter leadership. Currently, participation is limited to our members who attend the October chapter meeting in person. Anyone who would like to participate may contact Robert at past.president@pmicvc.org.

2nd Annual Golf Tournament: We are actively planning for our 2nd Annual PMI CVC Elizabeth Murray Scholarship Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held May 3, 2006. We had great success with the tournament last year and expect even greater things this year. The tournament will be held at the Virginia Crossings Resort. Contact our VP of Marketing, Luis Naranjo at vp.marketing@pmicvc.org or our Tournament Director, Jeff Heath at golf@pmicvc.org to get involved.

Region 5 PM Symposium: PMI Region Five Symposium will be held June 20 - 24, 2006. It will be hosted by PMI Metrolina Chapter, Inc, Charlotte. NC, USA. The theme is "Proving the Value of Project Management" featuring a host of speakers in four tracks in addition to renowned Keynote Speakers Neal Whitten, Doug DeCarlo, and Mark Adams. The symposium will also feature a Preparation Class to ready those interested in taking PMI®'s Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification Exam, Microsoft Project Orange Belt Certification, Earned Value Review and much, much more!!!

This event provides the following benefits:

  • Advocacy of the Project Management Profession
  • Awesome opportunity to interact and network with PMI regional members
  • Enjoy national-caliber Project Manager Presentations and training
  • Professional Development Units (PDU) opportunities
  • Advancement of PMI and the profession of Project Management
  • Enhanced exposure to project management-related companies and services to regional members

Besides all these events the board will be conducting a strategic planning session and is currently updating our chapters Policy and Procedures documentation. Things are going well. More exciting things to come in the weeks and months ahead!

Best regards,
Jim
