May 2008 - President's Letter

Letter from the President

Hello PMI CVC members and Project Management community.

Special Election Results
Thank you everyone for making our special election a success.  We had over 200 members who participated in the special election for the President-Elect position on the Board of Directors.  I must extend a special thank you to those members who participated as candidates in the election.

Our candidates for President-Elect were:

  • Vicky Boardley, PMP
  • Debbie Corbet-Cooper, PMP
  • Sri Mahadevan, MBA, CAPM
  • Walter Stone, PMP

The winner of this special President-Elect election is:

Debbie Corbet-Cooper, PMP

Join me in congratulating Debbie and wishing her all the best for a successful year of leadership of our chapter in 2009.  If you have any suggestions for improvement to the services offered to our members and the community at large, please talk to Debbie or any of the board members.

PMI Announces Newest Credential: PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)SM
The new PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)SM credential will be unveiled at the upcoming PMI College of Scheduling Conference on 4–7 May.  Eligible candidates for the credential can now apply online and schedule their examination for 30 May or beyond.
PMI is looking for potential credential-holders to take the examination during the incentive period, 30 May – 31 July 2008.  Those who schedule and sit for the examination during this period will receive 50 percent off the price of the examination, and be entered into one of four regional drawings for US $1,000.
The PMI College of Scheduling was a major contributor to the development of the credential and is one of the biggest supporters of the PMI-SP.  Together, the College of Scheduling and PMI are partnering to launch this specialty credential at the annual conference.

For those wishing to study and prepare for the examination, the PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)SM Examination Specification and the Practice Standard for Scheduling are just some of the many study aids available to assist in the preparation for the PMI-SP examination.

See additional details on the PMI-SP and to apply online.

Friendly Reminder: Keep Your PMI Messages Coming
Our communications to you are dependant on your personal information on file with PMI Global.  Membership data is sent to us from PMI monthly and we use that information to update our database and send communications to you.  Please login to the PMI.org website and update your personal information to stay informed on your local Project Management community!

Upcoming Events
It is not too late to get involved with the chapter.  We have many events in store for the next few months.

Our 4th Annual Golf Tournament will be held on June 10, 2008 at Hunting Hawk Golf Course.  Registration is now open and the event is filling quickly.  Last year, the event was completely sold out.  Also, sponsorship opportunities are still available.  Advertise your company to central Virginia’s top executives and Project Managers.  If you have questions or want to offer assistance with the Golf Tournament, please contact our VP of Marketing, Ed Hellermann, PMP at vp.marketing@pmicvc.org.

We are also offering many extra PDU-earning opportunities with our Professional Development Seminars.  We normally have 3-4 seminars per year and we hold them on Saturdays for 4-6 PDUs each.  This year we are able to bring many more opportunities for you to earn PDUs through the chapter.  It turns out to be perfect timing because three years ago PMI changed the PMP Exam and there was a peak in the number of Project Managers seeking certification prior to the examination changing.  Now, that class of PMPs is ready to recertify and needs to complete their required 60 PDUs in their 3-year cycle.

The Professional Development committee has already held three seminars and plans are underway for plenty more.  The next Saturday Seminar is being planned for June.  Stay tuned for registration and more information.

Other News
Our Communications Committee has been busy.  Check out the new Photo Gallery on the website within the News section.  This has been a goal of the committee for several years and our new VP of Communications, Rula Saba, PMP has made it a reality.  Thanks Rula!

Speaking of Communications, you can be part of this exciting committee by contacting Rula at vp.communications@pmicvc.org or Jennifer Perrin at vp.volunteerism@pmicvc.org.  The committee is looking for volunteers to help meet several other goals for the year.  Technical and non-technical roles are available and work can usually be tailored to meet your scheduling needs.

Our VP of Programs, Paul Gilbo, PMP is also looking for help for the Southside Dinner Meetings.  A Site Lead for this meeting is desperately needed.  If you haven’t been involved, but really enjoy the monthly dinner meetings, I want to urge you to help your chapter.  Without volunteers we cannot continue to offer services to our membership the way we want to.  If you have any questions about the position, please contact Paul Gilbo at vp.programs@pmicvc.org or Jennifer Perrin at vp.volunteerism@pmicvc.org.

As always, if you have ideas for new activities for the chapter, step up and volunteer.  We have many new events we would love to plan and offer, but we are short on the volunteers to do so.  Don’t hesitate!  Getting involved with the chapter is more rewarding than you can imagine.

As always, if you have any questions about the chapter or any other Project Management related topic, feel free to contact me.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming meeting.

Best Regards,
Christina Morgan, PMP
