September 2008 - President's Letter

Letter from the President

Hello PMI CVC members and Project Management community.

PMI CVC Pride
You will not want to miss the November Dinner Meetings this year.  I promise a very special announcement that will make us all very proud to be a part of such a fantastic chapter! Of course, if you just are not able to make it, I will repeat the announcement in January 2009.

PMI CVC Elections for 2009 Board of Directors
It’s almost time for elections again.  At the end of every year, we elect new members into half of the board positions.  This process puts limits on required commitments from our volunteers, keep fresh ideas coming for future PMI CVC endeavors and rotating only half the board each year, allows us to maintain some continuity for our usual operations.  This year we are electing the following positions:

  • President-Elect 2009 (position graduates to President in 2010 and Past President in 2011)
  • VP Finance – 2009 – 2010
  • VP Membership – 2009 – 2010
  • VP Communications – 2009 – 2010
  • VP Professional Development – 2009 – 2010

While the nomination phase is over for this year and the election slate has been released, we look forward to hearing from all our members through the voting process.  Our election will be held online again this year and you will be receiving notifications to the email address you have on file with PMI.  We are lining up many great candidates and look forward to another record-breaking election.

Change in PMP®’s Expiration Date
PMI Global is changing the expiration date for all PMPs.  If you are a certified Project Management Professional, you need to read this information and be prepared for the change.  There should be no negative impacts from the change.  Questions are welcomed by PMI Global and the chapter board members.

PMI Announces New Credential for Project Risk Management (PMI-RMPSM)
PMI is working on a new credential for Project Risk Management.  Check out the exposure draft on their website and provide feedback.

PMI Announces New Credential for Project Scheduling (PMI-SPSM)
PMI has released a new credential for schedule managers.  The new certification is called the PMI-SPSM.  SP stands for Scheduling Professional.  I am very excited about this new PMI credential and was selected to review the new examination for the credential.  Participating in the process PMI uses to approve new exams was very educational and a great overall experience.  I am very glad to be a part of something I’m very passionate about and extremely happy to see PMI expand and offer these new credentials.
For details on the new PMI-SP certification, please check out the PMI Website at the following link:

Volunteering
To our current Volunteers: We appreciate all you do for the chapter!  To the rest of you: We look forward to you volunteering with the chapter soon!  We always have room for volunteers, especially, if you have new ideas you would like to see implemented with the chapter.  The best way to have your ideas heard or even put in motion, is to volunteer to do whatever it is you think we need to be doing as a chapter.  Below are the areas within the chapter and brief descriptions of what these committees do:

Programs and Professional Development:  plan events, arrange speakers and topics, create communications on those events, prepare the facility, run the event, contract negotiation with vendors and sometimes speakers, maintain data on our programs and help determine what is of interest to the membership.

Certification: teach and mentor Project Managers, update certification documentation, event planning, speaker selection and scheduling and answering questions about certification for members.  This committee will be revising the certification materials when the new PMBOK is released later this year.  It’s a great opportunity to learn the new edition and help the community by volunteering to help with this large effort!

Communications: light web development, content editing, testing, research, creative development and design, tool maintenance and contract negotiation with vendors.

Finance: bookkeeping, record keeping, organizational registration and filing, budgeting and reporting.

Marketing: promotion of the chapter, planning and preparing for the golf tournament, creative advertising, partnership development and maintaining relationships with sponsors for future events, as well as, planning events to introduce Project Management to K-12 and college students and corporations interested in learning more about Project Management, PMI and PMI CVC.

Membership: working with Marketing on membership drives, maintain member data, answer membership questions, provide membership reporting, communicate with expiring members and welcome new members to the chapter.

Please consider volunteering.  We are here to work with you and help you find the opportunity that makes you happy and helps you grow as an individual and as a Project Manager.  Even if you think the position you like is taken, we always need back-ups!

As always, if you have any questions about the chapter or any other Project Management related topic, feel free to contact me.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming meeting.

Best Regards,
Christina Morgan, PMP
