President's Letter - October 2011

Happy Anniversary!

It was 15 years ago this month that the Central Virginia Chapter of PMI was chartered as an official chapter. A lot of things have happened over the last 15 years, but one thing that has remained is the chapter’s goal of promoting project management throughout the area.

As a reminder, we will have our anniversary dinner a week earlier than the normal dinner meeting (October 13th). Make sure you register early; there will be lots of fun activities and a wonderful guest speaker. The event has a reduced fee for members so we hope to see a lot of you attend.

The month holds other activities as well, starting with a Professional Development event on October 7th on how to hold Effective Meetings. A lot of work has gone into this class and most of us should find it useful. Also this month is the fall PMP Prep class. This class is being held on October 15th, 16th, 29th, and 30th.  If you are trying to get over the hump in you test preparation, this class will be a great way to pull it all together.

Since the football season started I have heard a number of discussions about fantasy teams and how the team is doing and whether “I should sit so and so this week.” Putting together a project team is similar in many ways to building a football fantasy team. You have to know the skills that each member brings with them and whether or not those skills are best suited for this specific project. By better understanding these aspects you can build a better team that best suits the project being done. Take the time to understand your team member’s skills and you will see better results in the end.

Take advantage of the classes and meetings being offered by the chapter through all of its various outlets (Professional Development, Certification, PMO LIG, Government LIG, and dinner meetings). There is always an opportunity to learn something new.  And we all know how important continual learning is.

As I have done in the past, I want to say Thank You to all of the chapter volunteers.  We could not do the things we do without you. If you are not a volunteer, please consider becoming one. There are many opportunities that can be tailored to fit your availability. Please contact our VP of Volunteerism if you have some time to lend.

Please feel free to contact me or any of the board members if you have any questions or concerns. We are here for you.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the anniversary dinner.

Sincerely,
John…
